I love moments like that!
After more than fifty years of studying and teaching the Bible, I’m still discovering wonderful truths tucked away in passages I’ve read countless times.
And that’s really why A Word From The Word exists.
I want to help you discover those treasures for yourself—to understand what God is saying, why it matters, and how His Word can make a difference in your life today.
So, pour yourself a cup of tea, open your Bible, and let’s spend a little time together in God’s Word.
Who’s behind A Word From The Word?
I’m John Miller. Those closest to me call me “Papa,” and you’re welcome to call me that, too.
I came to know Jesus Christ during the days of the Jesus Movement at Calvary Chapel in Costa Mesa, California. And what a journey it’s been!
Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of serving the Lord as a Bible teacher, pastor, ministry resource director, Christian financial coach, conference speaker, and ministry leader. I eventually served as lead pastor of Calvary Chapel Kona Coast in Kailua-Kona Hawai’i.
Now that I’ve retired from full-time pastoral ministry, I have more time to devote to something I’ve always loved: helping people discover the riches of God’s Word.
Many years ago, the Lord impressed something upon my heart that has guided my ministry ever since. I understood Him to be saying: “I’ve called you to teach My Word with fidelity, creativity, and enthusiasm.”
I’ve never forgotten those words.
Fidelity, because God’s Word deserves to be handled carefully, faithfully, honestly, and true to the original writings.
Creativity, because the greatest truths in the world deserve more than a dull presentation!
Enthusiasm, because how could I spend my life sharing the wonderful things God has said without getting excited about them?
And that’s what I hope you’ll find here: faithful Bible teaching, presented in fresh and understandable ways, by a guy who still gets excited about discovering something wonderful in God’s Word.
But here’s something I want you to know: I’m not here to impress you with how much I know about the Bible. I’m still learning myself! And I certainly don’t have all the answers.
I’m just a follower of Jesus who loves His Word, and wants to share some of what the Lord has taught me along the way.
Think of me as a grandfather who’s inviting you to pull up a chair and open the Bible with me.
What is “A Word From The Word”?
It’s a free daily Bible-teaching ministry built around a simple idea:
One chapter. One devotional commentary. One important truth.
We’re taking on a three-year journey through the Bible.
We’ll travel from Genesis to Revelation, exploring the people, places, events, promises, and wonderful truths God has preserved for us in His Word.
And along the way, we’ll be looking for those important truths that sometimes hide in plain sight.
Each Monday through Saturday, you’ll receive a short devotional commentary delivered right to your inbox.
Each commentary includes:
A little background to help you understand the day’s Bible chapter.
A closer look at one important key verse or truth.
A practical application to help you put God’s Word into practice.
A word of encouragement to carry with you through the day.
On Sundays, we’ll have something a little different called Sunday Echo. That’s where we look back over the week’s readings and discover how the truths we learned this week echo throughout the rest of Scripture.
You’ll also find occasional videos, additional Bible insights, and updates from the ministry.
And there’s no charge. These devotional commentaries are my gift to you.
One thing I hope you’ll do...
Read your Bible before you read my devotional commentary.
I mean that.
You don’t need me to tell you what God says. You need to hear from Him through His Word.
My commentaries are simply meant to come alongside your own Bible reading—to help explain something you may have wondered about, point out something you might have missed, or encourage you to put what you’ve read into practice.
I never want A Word From The Word to become a substitute for spending time in the Word itself.
After all, the goal isn’t to become more familiar with my writing.
It’s to become more familiar with God’s voice in Scripture.
What We Believe
You ought to know what I believe, especially if you’re considering spending the next three years studying God’s Word with me.
My faith is rooted in the historic Christian Gospel and the Biblical convictions that have guided my teaching throughout my years of ministry.
The Bible. I believe the Bible is the inspired, trustworthy, and authoritative Word of God. It is our foundation for understanding who God is, what He has done, and how He calls us to live.
God. I believe there is one true and living God, eternally existing in three Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Jesus Christ. I believe Jesus is the eternal Son of God, fully God and fully man. He was born of a virgin, lived without sin, died on the cross for our sins, rose bodily from the grave, and will come again.
Salvation. I believe we’re saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ—not by our good works, religious efforts, or attempts to make ourselves acceptable to God.
The Holy Spirit. I believe the Holy Spirit brings us to new life in Christ, lives within believers, helps us understand God’s Word, and empowers us to live lives that honor Him.
The Christian Life. I believe following Jesus is a lifelong journey of growing in grace, learning obedience, loving others, and becoming more like Him.
Our Hope. I believe Jesus Christ is coming again (soon!), and that those who belong to Him have the wonderful promise of resurrection and eternal life in His presence.
These aren’t just theological statements to me. They’re truths I’ve built my life upon.
And they’re the foundation of everything you’ll read here.

You don’t have to be a Bible scholar. You don’t have to understand every difficult passage. And you certainly don’t have to pretend you’ve got everything figured out.
And if you miss a day—or even a week—don’t give up. Just pick up where you left off.
Bring an open Bible, a willing heart, and a little time each day.
