Each Saturday, Watch & Pray will highlight a handful of stories affecting the Church around the world. The goal isn’t to keep us glued to the news. It’s to help us see what’s happening, think biblically about it, and know how to pray.
🇩🇿 ALGERIA: When the Church Has No Church Building
WHAT HAPPENED
Nearly all Protestant churches in Algeria have now been sealed by authorities after years of increasing restrictions. Reports indicate that all 47 churches associated with the officially recognized Protestant Church of Algeria have been closed. Yet believers haven’t stopped worshiping. Many are gathering quietly in homes and other locations—continuing to follow Christ without the freedom to gather openly.
WHY IT MATTERS
We can easily confuse the church with a church building. Our brothers and sisters in Algeria are being reminded of something the earliest Christians knew well: the Church exists wherever Christ’s people gather in His name. Governments may close buildings, but they cannot close the Body of Christ.

PRAY: Ask God to protect Algeria’s believers, strengthen their pastors, provide safe places to meet, and use their faithfulness to spread the Gospel.

🇨🇳 CHINA: A Pastor Pressured Through His Children
WHAT HAPPENED
A detained Chinese house-church pastor says prosecutors invoked his children while attempting to pressure him into confessing. His detention comes amid a broader crackdown on his congregation and reflects the intense personal pressure some Chinese Christian leaders face—not simply imprisonment, but pressure aimed at their families and deepest relationships.
WHY IT MATTERS
It’s easy to talk about “standing firm” when faith costs us little. For some believers, following Jesus can affect their freedom, livelihood, family—and future. Their courage should challenge comfortable Christians not toward guilt, but toward gratitude, prayer, and greater faithfulness.

PRAY: Pray for this pastor, his children and congregation. Ask the Lord to give them courage without bitterness, protection without fear, and opportunities to make Christ known.

🌏 ASIA: The Next Generation Says, “Send Me”
WHAT HAPPENED
Thousands of young Christians from across Asia recently gathered in Manila for Arise Asia 2026, an international missions gathering focused on preparing the next generation for Christian ministry and cross-cultural mission.
The movement reflects something remarkable happening in global Christianity: countries once thought of primarily as mission fields are increasingly becoming missionary-sending nations themselves.
WHY IT MATTERS
The Great Commission was never America’s assignment—or Europe’s assignment. It belongs to the whole Church. Christ is raising witnesses from every tribe, language, culture and nation to carry the Gospel to others.
And sometimes the people going are coming from places where following Jesus already carries a significant cost.

“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations.” — Matthew 28:19
PRAY: Pray for this generation of young Asian believers. Ask God to call, equip, provide for and send thousands of Gospel workers wherever Christ is not yet known.

🌍 PERSECUTED CHURCH: Don’t Forget Them
One larger theme keeps appearing in Christian news: persecution isn’t an isolated problem.
Open Doors’ 2026 reporting describes severe pressure on Christians across numerous nations. In places such as Sudan, believers may find themselves caught between warring factions. Elsewhere Christians face government surveillance, restrictions on gathering, difficulty obtaining Bibles, social rejection, imprisonment, or violence.
These aren’t simply “persecuted Christians.”
They’re our family.

“Remember the prisoners as if chained with them—those who are mistreated—since you yourselves are in the body also.” — Hebrews 13:3
PRAY: Pick one country this week and put it on your prayer list. Learn the names and stories of believers there. Pray for them as deliberately as you would pray for someone in your own church.

THE BIG PICTURE
Here’s what caught my attention this week.
In one country, Christians are losing their buildings.
In another, a pastor’s family is being used to pressure him.
Yet elsewhere, thousands of young believers are gathering and essentially saying:
“Here am I. Send me.”
That’s the story of the Church we’ve been reading for two thousand years.
Pressure comes.
Governments change.
Doors close.
Believers suffer.
And somehow...
the Gospel keeps moving.
Jesus said:
“I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.” — Matthew 16:18
Apparently, He meant it.
So don’t read Christian news merely to become informed.
Read it to become involved.
Watch.
Pray.
Encourage.
Give.
Go when God calls.
And never forget that somewhere today, a brother or sister you’ve never met is standing faithfully for the same Jesus you worship.
THIS WEEK’S PRAYER
Lord, open our eyes to Your Church beyond our own neighborhoods and congregations. Strengthen those who suffer for Your name. Protect pastors and missionaries. Raise up another generation willing to carry the Gospel wherever You send them. And keep us from becoming comfortable spectators when You have called us to be faithful witnesses. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
