The Healing of a Man Born Blind
(John 9)

Blind people receive their sight every year through remarkable advances in modern medicine. Cataracts can be removed, damaged corneas can be transplanted, and some retinal disorders can be treated in ways that would have seemed miraculous only a generation ago.

But John 9 isn’t describing any of those situations.

This man had never seen a sunrise. He had never watched a child’s face smile at him. He had never seen the color of the sky or the beauty of creation because he had been blind from birth.

That detail changes everything.

Jesus wasn’t restoring lost vision.

He was giving sight to eyes that had never seen.

What the Bible Says Happened

As Jesus and His disciples passed by, they saw a man who had been blind since birth. The disciples immediately asked whose sin had caused the condition—the man’s or his parents’.

Jesus rejected their question. “This happened so that the works of God should be revealed in him.”

Jesus then did something unexpected. He spat on the ground, made mud, spread it on the man’s eyes, and told him to wash in the Pool of Siloam.

The man obeyed.

When he washed, he came back seeing.

The miracle created an immediate controversy. Neighbors could hardly believe he was the same man who had spent years begging just to survive. The Pharisees questioned him repeatedly, searched for another explanation, and even interrogated his parents.

Yet one fact stubbornly remained. A man who had never seen anything in his life could now see perfectly. The chapter ends with the healed man placing his faith in Jesus and worshiping Him.

Why This Seems Scientifically Implausible

Modern medicine has accomplished extraordinary things, but there is an important difference between restoring damaged vision and creating a functioning visual system where one has never existed.

A person born blind may lack properly developed structures within the eye, the optic nerve, or even the brain’s visual processing centers. Vision is not simply about healthy eyeballs. It involves an incredibly complex system working together from birth.

If those structures never developed, washing mud from someone’s face would accomplish nothing.

Even today, doctors cannot instantly create a fully functioning visual system in someone born completely blind.

From a scientific standpoint, John 9 describes something far beyond natural healing.

It describes creation.

What God Actually Did

John never tells us that the mud possessed healing power. In fact, mud would normally make vision worse, not better. The mud was simply the means Jesus chose to use. The miracle came from Him.

However Jesus accomplished it, He had to create what had never existed before. If the man’s eyes were malformed, they had to be made whole. If the optic nerves were incomplete, they had to function perfectly. If the brain had never processed visual information, it immediately began interpreting a lifetime of sights.

Think about that for a moment.

A newborn spends months learning to recognize faces, judge distance, and interpret shapes and colors. Yet this man appears to do all of that immediately.

Jesus didn’t simply repair a problem.

He created an entirely new capacity for sight.

Why Believing This Is Reasonable

If we assume that nature is all there is, then John 9 presents an impossible situation. Nature cannot instantly create a complete visual system in an adult who has never seen.

But that’s not what Christianity claims happened. The Bible claims that the One who designed the human eye visited the world He had created.

The difficulty of any task is measured by the One doing the work. If Jesus is merely another teacher, this miracle cannot be explained. But if He is the eternal Son of God through whom all things were made, then creating functioning eyes is no more difficult than creating the first human eye in Eden.

In fact, that’s exactly what this miracle resembles. It isn’t merely healing. It is an act of creation. The more we understand the extraordinary complexity of human vision, the more impressive Christ’s miracle becomes.

Science doesn’t diminish the miracle.

It magnifies it.

What This Miracle Reveals About God

John’s Gospel is interested in much more than physical eyesight.

Throughout this chapter, two kinds of blindness are on display.

The blind man cannot see physically, but he gradually comes to recognize who Jesus is. The religious leaders possess perfect eyesight, yet they become increasingly blind to the truth standing in front of them.

By the end of the chapter, the roles have completely reversed. The man who was once blind sees both physically and spiritually.

Those who claimed to see remain spiritually blind. That is John’s point. Jesus came not only to heal bodies but to open blind hearts.

It has been said that “there are none so blind as those who will not see.” That describes the religious leaders of Jesus’ day perfectly. The truth was right in front of them, but they refused to see it.

The miracle also reveals Jesus as the Creator.

Only the One who originally designed the eye could create sight where none had ever existed. This wasn’t merely compassion for one suffering man—although it certainly was that. It was a public declaration that the Creator Himself had entered His creation.

Finally, the chapter reminds us that God’s greatest work is often deeper than the miracle everyone notices.

Physical blindness lasts for a lifetime. Spiritual blindness lasts for eternity unless Christ opens our eyes.

Whenever I read John 9, I’m reminded that the greatest miracle wasn’t the man’s new eyesight.

It was his growing faith.

The chapter begins with a blind beggar sitting beside the road. It ends with a worshiper kneeling before Jesus. That’s the greater transformation.

You may still wonder exactly how Jesus recreated a man’s vision. John doesn’t answer every medical question we might ask because his purpose is much greater than satisfying our curiosity.

He wants us to recognize who Jesus is.

The One who opened the eyes of a man born blind is the same One who can open our eyes to the truth about God, ourselves, and the hope found in Him.

That is a miracle every one of us still needs.

Imagine standing on the banks of the Jordan that day. The air thick with dust, the murmur of the crowd swirling, the prophet in camel hair pointing at a man quietly approaching through the throng. Then John’s voice pierces the moment: “Behold!” That word isn’t a passing glance—it’s an invitation to gaze, to lock eyes, to let what you see change you.

We rush past words like “behold,” but in Scripture, it’s a divine command to stop scrolling, still your soul, and see—really see. In the original Greek, it means “to stare at and discern clearly.” When John said, “Behold the Lamb of God,” he wasn’t just identifying Jesus; he was instructing Israel—and us—to fix our gaze on the One who would carry away the world’s sin.

To behold is not to glance—but to gaze. When you behold the Lamb, you’re not examining doctrine; you’re encountering a Person. The sacrificial imagery runs deep. Every lamb slain since Abel’s offering pointed to this moment. Every Passover shadowed this reality. And now, standing in the flesh, is the final Lamb—God’s own provision for sin.

When we “behold” Jesus rightly, sin shrinks, pride bows, and the noise of life fades. Worship becomes the natural reflex of revelation. To behold Him is to become like Him. “And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another.” (2 Corinthians 3:18). That’s the transformation that comes when you look long enough until your heart mirrors His.

Maybe you’ve seen Jesus before—but have you beheld Him lately? Have you lingered at the cross until gratitude burned hot again? Have you stared into His Word until the Lamb filled your horizon and every lesser thing blurred out of focus? The power of your faith is not in how much you understand—but in how deeply you behold.

Today, may your eyes be opened to truly behold the Lamb—not in passing, but in wonder. May your heart slow down long enough to see Him as Heaven sees Him—radiant, sufficient, and near. And as you gaze upon His beauty, may the clutter of life fade, your faith deepen, and your soul reflect His light.

Today we begin our journey through the Gospel According to John—and oh, what a journey it is! This is the same John (Iōannēs in Greek) who met Jesus on a sandy Galilean beach, clueless that his life was about to be flipped upside down. He saw miracles that bent the laws of nature, love that broke every barrier, and glory that revealed God wrapped in human skin.

John leaned on Jesus at the Last Supper, stood firm at the cross when others scattered, and sprinted to the empty tomb. Decades later, this once fiery “Son of Thunder” has mellowed into the tender “Apostle of Love,” writing to tell us what he knows firsthand: Jesus isn’t just a teacher or prophet—He’s the eternal Creator and Sustainer of all things—full of grace and truth.

When John declares, “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:14), he’s describing the greatest miracle in history. The infinite became an infant. The Creator stepped into His creation. Heaven moved into the neighborhood—and nothing was ever the same.

“The Word became flesh” isn’t poetic fluff—it’s a thunderclap of truth. The eternal Logos, through whom all things were made (John 1:3), didn’t just look human or wear a human disguise. He became flesh. The Greek word egeneto means “to come into being.” This is the miracle of the Incarnation: the eternal Son of God took on our humanity without losing His divinity.

And “dwelt among us”? That’s tent talk. Literally, it means He “pitched His tent” among us—just like God’s glory once filled the Tabernacle (“Tent”) in the wilderness, now it filled a person: Jesus Christ. Through Him, the invisible God became visible, touchable, knowable. He didn’t shout truth from the clouds—He walked it out in sandals.

So how do we respond? By making room for Him to “tabernacle” inside of us. The same Word who walked among on Earth so long ago, now wants to live within us through His Spirit. “Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?” (1 Corinthians 3:16) This truth is blazing through Scripture: God doesn’t just visit—He moves in. He pitches His tent, fills us as His temple, and makes our hearts His home.

May Jesus—God made flesh—fill your heart with wonder today. May His nearness comfort you, His Word guide you, and His Spirit dwell richly within you. And may His glory shine through you, so others may see and believe.

There’s a peculiar irony in today’s verse—an itch for truth that refuses to be scratched by it. There’s a craving in the human heart that truth alone can address—but many would rather “scratch” it with something that feels good.

In Paul’s time, “itching ears” was a figure of speech describing people who craved novelty and excitement—listeners who wanted their ears tickled, not their hearts convicted. It was a craving for stimulation, pleasure, and affirmation—an appetite for words that entertain the mind, soothe the ego, but avoid the truth about sin and the cross.

The danger isn’t that people don’t hear truth—it’s that they won’t put up with it. Sound doctrine requires persistence. Commitment. Diligence. It demands that we sit still long enough for the Holy Spirit’s conviction to do its work. But when our spiritual appetites are trained on entertainment, truth feels abrasive. So we listen to influencers that affirm our opinions and mute the ones that don’t. The Greek word Paul used here for “accumulate” means to pile up—a heap of teachers and influencers, all saying what the flesh wants to hear.

In every generation, people have been tempted by what’s new—new ideas, new “truths,” new takes on old doctrines. But the Gospel isn’t a product to be reinvented; it’s a revelation to be received. The saying is true: “If it’s truth, it’s not new. And if it’s new, it’s not truth.” God’s truth is eternal—it doesn’t evolve with culture or bend to trends.

Today, this ailment has gone digital. Our feeds, podcasts, and playlists can become echo chambers where our desires are disguised as doctrines. We scroll for affirmation, not transformation. Myths—Paul calls them. Pleasant words that replace truth with pleasing lies. They’re not always wild fables or obvious falsehoods; sometimes they’re half-truths that sound holy but subtly dethrone Christ from the center. They’re nothing but shams, charades, imitations.

But Paul’s solution is stunningly simple: Preach the Word (verse 2). When the world is itching, only God’s truth can truly scratch and soothe. The Word doesn’t cater—it cuts, cleanses, and heals. It confronts falsehood not with volume, but with clarity. In an age of noise, the steady voice of Scripture becomes the true lifeline of sanity.

So check your spiritual appetite. Do you crave comfort more than correction? Popularity more than purity? Jesus didn’t promise easy truth—but He did promise freedom to those who hold fast to God’s genuine truth (John 8:31–32).

May the Spirit of Truth guard your heart from counterfeit gospels and reawaken your appetite for the living Word. May your ears find delight not in what flatters, but in what frees. And may God’s voice become the one sound you delight in more than any other.

The Bible isn’t just God’s instruction manual—it’s His breath, still warm with life. Every verse carries His exhale, whispering wisdom, conviction, and direction into the lungs of your soul. 2 Timothy 3:16–17 reminds us that Scripture isn’t a relic—it’s respiration. Think about breath. It’s invisible, essential, rhythmic. You don’t notice it until you lose it. The same is true of God’s Word—it quietly sustains every part of a believer’s inner life. The moment we drift from it, our faith starts to suffocate under the weight of opinion, emotion, and noise. Paul tells Timothy that all Scripture is God-breathed. The Greek word theopneustos literally means “breathed out by God.” Picture that—each line of the Bible born on the breath of the Almighty, carrying His DNA, His cadence, His heartbeat.

We often approach Scripture as if it’s a rule book for behavior or a reference guide for theology. But what if we treated it like breath—something we must constantly inhale to live? Every inhale brings teaching: the shaping of truth. Every exhale releases reproof: the letting go of lies. Inhale correction—aligning our crooked ways. Exhale training—living out what we’ve learned. The Word isn’t static ink; it’s circulation. It doesn’t just inform—it transforms.

Verse 17 completes the thought: that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. The Word makes us complete—not perfect in performance, but whole in purpose. It outfits us for every assignment God sends our way, whether that’s comforting a grieving friend, resisting temptation, or simply enduring Monday with grace. The Bible doesn’t just equip us for ministry moments—it prepares us for ordinary faithfulness.

So breathe. Don’t read Scripture like a checklist; inhale it like air. Let it fill your lungs with the reality of who God is. Let it steady your pulse when fear rises. Let it clear the fog of doubt. The same breath that spoke stars into being now speaks through His Word into you.

May the Lord teach you to inhale His Word as life itself. May every verse become breath to your weary soul and strength to your wavering heart. May His living Word fill you, shape you, and send you out fully equipped to do good in His name.

Jesus Walks on Water
(Matthew 14:22–33)

If someone asked you to name the most recognizable miracles of Jesus, walking on water would almost certainly make the list.

It’s one of those events that even people with very little knowledge of the Bible have heard about. And it’s also one of the easiest to dismiss. After all, everyone knows people can’t walk on water.

Exactly.

The Bible never suggests they can.

The whole point of the miracle is that Jesus did something no human being could ever do. So instead of asking whether people can naturally walk on water, let’s ask the more important question: What does this miracle tell us about Jesus?

What the Bible Says Happened

The miracle took place shortly after Jesus miraculously fed more than five thousand people with a few loaves of bread and two fish.

He sent His disciples ahead by boat while He went into the hills to pray. Hours later, sometime before dawn, the disciples were battling strong winds and rough seas on the Sea of Galilee.

Then they saw something they never expected .Jesus was walking toward them on top of the water.

Their first reaction wasn’t excitement. It was terror. They assumed they were seeing a ghost. Jesus immediately called out, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.”

Peter answered, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.”

Jesus simply replied, “Come.”

Peter climbed out of the boat and actually began walking toward Jesus. But when he shifted his attention from Christ to the storm around him, fear took over and he began to sink. Jesus reached out His hand, caught him, and together they climbed into the boat.

Immediately, the wind stopped.

The disciples responded by worshiping Jesus, saying, “Truly You are the Son of God.”

That’s the miracle Matthew records.

Why This Seems Scientifically Implausible

Water does not support the weight of a human being.

Our bodies are too dense, and water’s surface tension is far too weak to hold us up. Even in perfectly calm conditions, we sink unless we are floating.

The conditions in Matthew 14 were anything but calm. The disciples were fighting wind and waves in the middle of the night. The Sea of Galilee is well known for sudden, violent storms caused by surrounding terrain, making the scene even more dramatic.

Some have suggested Jesus walked across a hidden sandbar or unusually shallow water. The Gospel writers rule that out. The boat was well offshore, and Peter also walked on the water before he began to sink. The account simply doesn’t fit a natural explanation.

From every scientific standpoint, people do not walk on liquid water.

That’s why this event is called a miracle.

What God Actually Did

Matthew doesn’t explain how Jesus remained above the surface of the water. He simply tells us that He did it. Whatever the mechanism, Jesus exercised authority over the physical laws governing gravity, buoyancy, and the behavior of water.

The waves remained waves. The wind remained wind.

But beneath Jesus’ feet, creation responded differently because its Creator was present.

Peter’s brief experience makes this even more remarkable. Peter possessed no supernatural ability of his own. As long as he trusted Jesus he was sustained above the water. When fear replaced faith, Peter immediately began to sink.

The miracle wasn’t generated by Peter’s confidence. It was sustained by Christ’s power.

Matthew’s emphasis is clear: Jesus wasn’t demonstrating unusual human potential. He was revealing divine authority.

Why Believing This Is Reasonable

Some people assume believing this miracle requires abandoning science or reason.

It doesn’t.

Science accurately describes how water normally behaves. Matthew describes a moment when the One who created the laws of nature temporarily caused the water to behave differently.

Those are not competing ideas. They’re different categories.

The difficulty of any task is measured by the One doing the work.

If someone posted on Facebook that they walked across the Sea of Galilee yesterday, you’d assume there was either a hidden bridge... or a loose screw.

But if Jesus is who the Gospels claim He is—the eternal Son of God through Whom all things were created and by Whom all things are held together—then walking on water is no more difficult than creating the sea itself.

The miracle isn’t unreasonable because it violates natural expectations. It’s reasonable because it fits the identity of the One performing it.

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus repeatedly demonstrates authority over creation. He commands storms, multiplies food, heals disease, raises the dead, and forgives sins. Walking on water belongs naturally alongside those other miracles.

Each one answers the same question: Who is Jesus?

What This Miracle Reveals About God

This miracle reveals that Jesus is Master over creation.

In ancient times, the sea often symbolized chaos, danger, and forces beyond human control. Yet Scripture repeatedly describes God as the One who rules the waters.

By walking across the sea, Jesus wasn’t merely performing an impressive miracle. He was doing what only God does.

The miracle also reveals Christ’s heart toward His followers. Notice where Jesus went. He didn’t wait for the disciples to reach safety before meeting them. He came to them while they were still struggling against the storm. That’s still how He works.

He often meets His people in the middle of their greatest fears rather than removing every difficulty before they encounter it.

Peter’s experience also reminds us that faith is not confidence in ourselves. It is confidence in Christ.

The moment Peter focused on the wind, he began to sink. The moment he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Jesus immediately reached out His hand. Even Peter’s failure became an opportunity to experience Christ’s grace.

Closing Thought

When I read this story, I don’t find myself asking how Jesus managed to walk on water.

I find myself asking why the disciples ended up worshiping Him.

The answer is simple. They recognized that they had witnessed something only God could do.

The greatest miracle wasn’t that Jesus walked on the sea. It was that the Creator of the sea had come to rescue those who were struggling in it.

It tells us who Jesus is.

He is not merely a remarkable teacher or a gifted miracle worker.

He is the Son of God, the Lord of creation, and the Savior who still comes to His people in the middle of life’s storms.

Let’s be honest—when God disciplines His children, it rarely feels like a warm hug. Hebrews 12:5–6 reminds us, “The Lord disciplines the one He loves.” Comforting words... until you’re smack in the middle of it, wondering if love always feels this intense.

Discipline can show up as slammed doors, prayers that remain unanswered, relationships unraveling, finances evaporating, or a conviction so heavy we can’t shake it. It stings. It confuses. But behind every uncomfortable nudge is the unmistakable signature of a loving Father who refuses to let His children drift into danger.

Picture a sculptor chisels away at marble. Each strike may seem harsh to the stone, but it’s the only way a masterpiece is born. Likewise, God’s chiseling moments—those seasons of divine correction—are chiseling us into something breathtaking.

The Greek word for disciplines (“paideia”) in this verse means “training” or “child-rearing.” In the first-century world, discipline was purposeful instruction. Just like a parent who lovingly teaches through both encouragement and consequences, God uses His Word, His Spirit, and yes, even painful circumstances to steer our hearts back to truth. His goal isn’t to shame us—it’s to purify us. He’s stripping away the attitudes, habits, and desires that keep us from walking closely with Him.

So what does that look like today? It might be that gnawing conviction after snapping at someone, and the Spirit gently nudges, “Make it right.” Or the loss of a job that exposes how deeply your identity was tied to success. Maybe it’s a season of silence where God feels distant—but in that quiet, He’s teaching you to trust beyond feelings. Sometimes His correction comes through people who speak truth that slices through pride, or through failure that forces humility. These moments? They’re spiritual surgery—sharp, precise, and absolutely necessary.

Think of Peter after denying Jesus. His failure shattered him—but it also remade him. Jesus’ beachside confrontation (“Do you love Me?”) wasn’t a rebuke—it was a rescue. Peter’s tears were real, but so was his transformation.

The Lord’s discipline rarely feels enjoyable. Verse 11 tells us, “All discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.” As distressing as it may feel, don’t despise it—discern it. Ask, “Lord, what are You correcting in me?” Surrender to the process. Surrender to Him. Let His correction deepen your dependence and draw you closer to His heart.

May the Lord give you ears tender enough to hear His correction, courage bold enough to receive it with gratitude, and grace wide enough to see every hardship as proof—you are His beloved child.

Real faith isn’t blind optimism—it’s bold confidence anchored in the unshakable promises of God. Hebrews 11 (often called the “Hall of Faith”) spotlights the many men and women who trusted God when everything screamed “impossible.” It brings faith to life through Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Moses, Rahab, David, Daniel, and others. By faith, they answered God’s call, took Him at His word, endured hardship, and fixed their eyes on a heavenly reward.

Verses 33 and 34 spotlight a gallery of fearless believers whose faith turned the tables on the impossible. When enemy kingdoms loomed, they stood firm. When injustice reigned, they became God’s instruments of righteousness. Faith helped them hold onto promises no one else could see, stare down lions without flinching, and walk through fire without burning. What looked like weakness became their weapon; what seemed like defeat became the setup for victory. These weren’t spiritual giants born with capes and halos—they were ordinary men and women who put extraordinary trust in their all-powerful Superhero God, and made history through their surrendered hearts.

The original readers of Hebrews were Jewish believers under fire—persecuted and tempted to retreat. So, the writer points to Israel’s faith-warriors: Daniel in the lions’ den, Shadrach in the furnace, Gideon with his tiny army, David facing Goliath. Why? To remind them (and us!) that faith doesn’t shrink when fear gets loud—it rises. Every “no way” moment was a stage for God to flex His power through surrendered hearts.

Here’s the heart of it: the difficulty of any task depends on who’s doing the work. You can’t dig a swimming pool with a teaspoon—but hand the job to a bulldozer, and it’s done before lunch. Faith hands the hard stuff to God. You may feel weak, but that’s exactly where His strength shines brightest. Faith isn’t the absence of fear—it’s the refusal to let fear have the final word.

So what now? Step up. Pray bold prayers. Obey even when it feels upside-down. Speak life when others speak doubt. And when you feel boxed in, remember—faith turns dead ends into divine doorways. The same God who shut lions’ mouths and split seas still moves mountains today. He’s just looking for someone who believes He can.

Today, may the Lord strengthen your heart with the same unshakable faith that carried the heroes of Hebrews 11.
May your confidence rest not in your strength, but in His steadfast promises. And when fear or unbelief whispers “impossible,” may you hear the louder voice of Heaven saying, “I am able.”

Bringing pleasure to our Creator is not just a nice idea or a spiritual bonus. It’s the core, soul-deep, existence-level need of every human being: to please God. Yep, deep down in the depths of every heart, there’s one burning desire—to bring joy to our Creator. It’s etched into our spiritual DNA.

We were handcrafted in His image to reflect His delight. Before sin barged in and broke everything, Adam and Eve walked with God in perfect, unfiltered harmony. His pleasure was their ultimate joy. But once sin cracked that connection, humanity started chasing meaning in all the wrong places—success, pleasure, achievement, applause. And yet, the soul stays restless until it’s realigned with the smile of its Maker. We were designed to please God—and until we do, nothing else will ever truly satisfy us.

So why please Him? Because we were made for Him. When we please God, He experiences delight, intimacy, glory, fellowship, and—brace yourself—a mysterious but breathtaking rest. And for us, when we please Him, we get peace, deeper relationship, and alignment with His will. It’s the highest act of love—a soul-level “thank You” for His grace. But when we don’t please Him, we drift from the One we were created for. Fellowship with God births joy, obedience, confidence, love, and assurance. But broken fellowship? It breeds darkness, fear, and a loss of peace—a life that might sparkle for a moment but is eternally hollow.

So how do we please God? Hebrews 11:6 drops the mic: Faith! Not perfection, not penance, not religion, not IQ points, not ritual, not cleverness, not performance—FAITH is what He’s after. The Greek word for faith (“pistis”) means trust, reliance, loyalty. Faith isn’t just believing God exists—it’s believing Him enough to depend on Him fully.

Martin Luther learned this the hard way. For years, he thought he could please God through suffering, fasting, self-inflicted pain, and marathon confession sessions. But peace kept slipping through his fingers—until Romans 1:17 thundered into his soul: “The just shall live by faith.” That one verse shattered his fear. Luther finally saw what pleases God—trust, not torment. The gates of grace flew open, and joy came rushing in.

The book of Hebrews was written to believers who were bone-tired—worn down by persecution and delays. Some were ready to tap out, wondering if following Jesus was worth the cost. The writer doesn’t sugarcoat it. He pleads: Don’t toss your confidence! Your bold, blazing trust in Christ will be richly rewarded. The word “endurance” in Greek is hypomonē, which means steadfast perseverance—staying strong under pressure. This reminds us to stand under the pressure knowin that God’s promises may not arrive instantly, but they always arrive eventually.

We live in a microwave culture—instant success, instant answers, instant relief. But spiritual maturity? It’s slow-cooked in the waiting. Every trial, every delay, every disappointment is a workout for your endurance muscles. The Christian life isn’t a sprint—it’s a marathon. And confidence in Christ is what keeps you moving when everything inside you screams, “Just stop already!”

Picture this: a marathon runner tosses his water bottle halfway through the race because it feels heavy. A few miles later? He’s bone-dry and full of regret. That’s what some believers do—they ditch their confidence right before the breakthrough. Remember Jericho? God’s people marched for six days with zero results. But on the seventh day—boom! Everything shifted. The reward came after the endurance.

Of all the miracles in the Bible, the virgin birth may be the one that causes the most immediate skepticism. After all, we all know where babies come from. Mary knew too.

When the angel Gabriel announced that she would bear the Messiah, her response was not disbelief but a perfectly reasonable question:

“How will this be, since I am a virgin and have no intimacy with any man?” (Luke 1:34, AMP)

She wasn’t questioning God’s power. She was acknowledging biology.

So let’s look carefully at what the Bible actually claims.

What the Bible Says Happened

Both Matthew and Luke tell us that Jesus was conceived before Mary and Joseph had intimate marital relations as husband and wife.

Matthew writes that Mary “was found with child of the Holy Spirit.”

Luke gives us more detail. Gabriel tells Mary that the Holy Spirit will come upon her and that “the power of the Highest will overshadow you.” As a result, the child born to her would be called “the Son of God.”

The claim is remarkably straightforward. Jesus was conceived without a human father.

The Gospel writers don’t present this as a symbol or a metaphor. They present it as history.

That is why the virgin birth has remained one of Christianity’s central claims from the very beginning.

Why This Seems Scientifically Implausible

Human reproduction follows well-established biological laws.

A child receives genetic material from both a father and a mother. Without both contributions, natural conception does not occur.

Modern medicine has accomplished remarkable things through reproductive technology, but it still cannot create a human embryo without the necessary genetic material of both parents.

From the standpoint of biology, the virgin conception is impossible through natural processes.

That’s exactly what makes it a miracle. The Bible is not asking us to believe that Mary somehow conceived naturally without a husband.

It is claiming that God acted supernaturally.

What God Actually Did

Luke doesn’t explain the biological mechanics, and neither should we pretend that we can.

Instead, he emphasizes God’s direct involvement.

The Holy Spirit initiated what nature never could.

However God accomplished the miracle. “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.” (Luke 1:35) He supplied everything necessary for the conception of a fully human child while preserving the uniqueness of Jesus as the eternal Son of God.

This was not God ignoring biology. It was God working above biology.

We’ve already seen something similar in Genesis. Adam did not come into existence through ordinary human reproduction because there were no human parents. God directly created him.

The virgin conception represents another unique act of creation.

The God who created the first man without human parents now brought His Son into the world through a virgin’s womb.

Both events stand outside the ordinary patterns of nature because both served unique purposes in God’s plan of redemption.

Why Believing This Is Reasonable

The question isn’t whether human beings naturally conceive children this way. They don’t.

The question is whether the Creator who designed human life has the authority to intervene within His own creation.

If God can create DNA, cells, and human life itself, then creating a unique conception for His Son presents no difficulty.

The difficulty of any task is measured by the One doing the work.

Some people assume believing in the virgin birth means rejecting science.

I would argue the opposite.

Science helps us appreciate just how extraordinary this event really was. It tells us precisely where natural explanation ends and divine intervention begins.

The miracle only becomes unreasonable if we begin with the assumption that God does not exist. Or that He does not intervene in human affairs.

But if He does exist—and if He created human life in the first place—then the virgin conception is entirely consistent with His power.

It is also consistent with Biblical prophecy. More than seven centuries before Jesus’ birth, Isaiah foretold that “the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son.” The birth of Jesus was not an isolated miracle. It was the fulfillment of a promise God had been making for generations.

What This Miracle Reveals About God

You may still have questions about how the miracle happened. That’s understandable. Scripture never satisfies every curiosity we might have about the mechanics.

Instead, it invites us to look beyond the miracle itself and consider the One it reveals.

The virgin birth is not simply evidence that God can do the impossible.

It is the announcement that God has come to rescue His people—and that He always accomplishes exactly what He promises.

Jesus isn’t some far-off Savior who did a heroic thing once and then disappeared from our lives. No way. He lives forever—yes, forever—to keep saving, keep interceding, and keep holding you fast with a grip that never lets go.

In Hebrews, the writer paints a stunning picture: Jesus is our flawless High Priest, unlike the old-school priests who were bound by time, frailty, and eventually, death. Jesus doesn’t hand out half-salvations or spiritual band-aids. His saving work is full-throttle, all-in, and absolutely perfect. Think of it this way: Jesus saves to the “nth degree.” It’s a vivid way of saying He goes all the way—like cranking a dial to 11 when the scale only goes to 10. Jesus saves fully, completely, and eternally—leaving no sin uncovered, no soul overlooked, and no ceiling on His grace.

So what does that mean for you today? It means you’re never left to stumble through life solo. Jesus is praying for you right now—about your battles, your temptations, your wounds, and yes, even your doubts. Imagine that: before you even whisper a prayer, Jesus is already speaking to the Father on your behalf. Your salvation isn’t just a golden ticket to heaven someday; it’s a present-tense rescue mission in full swing.

So lean in. Draw near. Don’t grit your teeth and try to power through life alone, and don’t treat prayer like a last-ditch emergency button. If Jesus Himself is already praying for you, why wouldn’t you run to Him? Bring your burdens. Confess your sins. Drop your fears. And thank Him—thank Him!—that He hasn’t stopped saving you. There’s no shadow too deep, no failure too massive, no fear too fierce for His grace to reach.

In Hebrews 4 and 5, the writer begins unpacking a glorious truth: Jesus is our Great High Priest. Not just any priest—He’s exalted, eternal, and empathetic. Verse 12 delivers the knockout punch: “By this time you ought to be teachers.” Translation? You’ve been believers long enough to be leading others—but you’re still sipping spiritual milk when you should be grilling Gospel steak.

The Christian life is meant to grow in stages: (1) Infant faith: newly born again, learning the basics. (2) Bottle-fed faith: nourished by foundational truths like repentance and salvation. (3) Solid-food faith: strengthened by obedience and applying the Word. (4) Reproducing faith: mature enough to feed others, guide them, and multiply the Gospel. It’s a journey—from being nurtured to becoming a nurturer. From learner to leader. From taught to teacher. From receiver to reproducer.

But those Hebrew Christians? Stuck in spiritual infancy. Still wearing spiritual diapers and drinking from the baby bottle. Still needing someone to re-teach them the basics. Imagine being told, after years in the faith, “You are still like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food.”

Here’s the kicker: maturity isn’t measured by how long you’ve been a Christ follower—it’s measured by how much you’ve grown into Christlikeness. This type of growth leads to reproduction. Mature believers disciple others. They model godliness, encourage the young in faith, and teach by example.

So... are you still bottle-fed? Or are you ready to feed others? After all, you “ought to” be a teacher by now! Wait! What?! Me, a Teacher? Yes, you and every Christ follower are called to pass on what they have learned to others!

You don’t need a pulpit or a seminary degree. You just need a willing heart. So, put down the bottle and start a daily diet of being nourished by the solid-food of God’s Word. Then ask God to show you someone to teach, guide, or encourage. Love them. Pray with them. Serve them. And yes—teach them. By this time... you really ought to.

The Word of God isn’t just words—it’s alive! It’s a living, breathing, divine voice straight from Heaven’s throne room. God says, “I see the bone, but I’m after the marrow—the life within!”

The Word doesn’t stay on the surface. It digs deep—way past appearances and straight into motives, thoughts, and intentions. It exposes not just what we do but why we do it. That’s the Spirit’s holy spotlight, illuminating the secret corners we sometimes prefer to keep dim.

So when you open your Bible, don’t expect a gentle bedtime story. Expect surgery! Sometimes the Word comforts; sometimes it convicts; sometimes it slices right through our excuses like a hot knife through butter. And yes—it stings! But that pain? It’s the pain of healing. The same divine scalpel that cuts also cleanses. Like a skilled surgeon removing spiritual infection, God’s Word cuts only to cure.

At first, being fully known by God can feel unsettling. But then comes freedom—pure, glorious freedom. No more hiding. No more pretending. Just the peace of knowing that the One who sees everything loves you completely and is shaping you into the image of Christ.

God’s Word also teaches and trains, guides and guards, cleanses and corrects. It strengthens when you’re weary, nourishes when you’re dry, and reignites your heart when your passion fades. It’s your map, your mirror, your sword, your comfort, and your daily bread all rolled into one!

Today, may the living Word of God pierce your heart with truth, wash your soul with grace, and flood your spirit with unshakable hope. And may you walk each day wide open before the Lord—transformed by His living Word and filled with His life.

If there’s one miracle in the Bible that people love to joke about, it’s probably Jonah and the great fish.

Even many people who respect Jesus find themselves wondering, Did that really happen? A man survives inside a giant sea creature for three days and three nights, then walks back onto dry land alive? It sounds more like fiction than history.

I understand that reaction. If someone claimed this happened last week, we’d probably Nod along and assume their brain’s Wi-Fi was temporarily buffering.

But the Bible presents Jonah’s experience as a real event. Jesus Himself referred to it as history. So instead of dismissing it or explaining it away, let’s look carefully at what Scripture actually says and why thoughtful Christians continue to believe it.

What the Bible Says Happened

God called Jonah to preach repentance to the city of Nineveh. Jonah wanted nothing to do with that assignment, so he boarded a ship headed in the opposite direction.

God responded by sending a violent storm. The experienced sailors knew they were dealing with something far beyond ordinary weather. After casting lots, they discovered Jonah was the reason for their trouble.

Jonah told them to throw him overboard. Reluctantly they did, and immediately the sea became calm.

Then the Bible says:

“Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah.”

Jonah remained inside the fish for three days and three nights. During that time he prayed, confessed God’s sovereignty, and renewed his trust in the Lord. At God’s command, the fish brought Jonah safely back to dry land.

The story is told simply and directly. There is no indication that we are meant to read it as poetry or allegory. Scripture presents it as history.

Why This Seems Scientifically Implausible

From a biological standpoint, Jonah’s survival appears impossible.

The digestive system of any large marine animal is not designed to sustain human life. Oxygen would quickly become scarce. Digestive acids, pressure, darkness, temperature, and confinement would all work against survival.

Even if someone were somehow swallowed alive, remaining conscious and healthy for three days stretches far beyond anything natural science has ever observed.

That’s why attempts to explain Jonah by identifying a particular species of whale or fish usually miss the point. The Bible never suggests Jonah survived because the animal was unusually accommodating.

Jonah survived because God intervened. The miracle isn’t the size of the fish. The miracle is the God who appointed it.

What God Actually Did

Notice how often God’s direct involvement appears in these two chapters.

God called Jonah.

God sent the storm.

God revealed Jonah’s guilt to the sailors.

God prepared the fish.

God heard Jonah’s prayer.

God commanded the fish to release him.

The fish was never the central actor. God was.

However the miracle unfolded, God preserved Jonah’s life in an environment where human survival should not have been possible. He either suspended normal biological processes, supernaturally sustained Jonah’s body, or protected him in ways beyond our understanding.

The Bible doesn’t explain the mechanics because the mechanics aren’t the point.

The point is that God accomplished exactly what He intended.

Jonah discovered that even the depths of the sea lie completely within God’s reach.

Why Believing This Is Reasonable

People sometimes say, “Science proves this couldn’t happen.”

Actually, science tells us that it couldn’t happen naturally. That’s an important distinction.

Miracles are not extraordinary examples of ordinary processes. They are moments when the Creator acts above those processes to accomplish His purposes—supernaturally.

The difficulty of Jonah’s survival depends entirely upon the identity of the One preserving him. If the universe operates without God, then Jonah’s story is impossible. But if the God who created life, the oceans, and every living creature chose to preserve one man inside a fish, the miracle becomes entirely consistent with His power.

Jesus Himself strengthened that conclusion. When He spoke about His own death and resurrection, He pointed back to Jonah’s three days in the fish as a non-fiction, historical event that foreshadowed His own burial and resurrection. Jesus treated Jonah as history, not mythology.

For followers of Christ, that carries tremendous weight.

What This Miracle Reveals About God

Jonah’s story is not primarily about a fish. It’s about God’s relentless pursuit of people who are running from Him.

Jonah fled because he didn’t want Nineveh to receive God’s mercy. Instead of abandoning His reluctant prophet, God pursued him across the sea.

Even the storm was an act of mercy. God could have allowed Jonah to disappear forever. Instead, He interrupted Jonah’s rebellion in order to restore him to the mission for which he had been called.

The fish was not merely an instrument of judgment. It became an instrument of rescue.

That pattern appears throughout Scripture. God’s discipline is often designed to restore rather than destroy. He confronts us because He loves us too much to let us continue walking away from Him.

The story also reminds us that no one can outrun God. Jonah traveled hundreds of miles in the wrong direction, but God’s presence reached him effortlessly. Whether on a ship, beneath the sea, or inside the fish, Jonah discovered the same truth: God was already there.

That is both humbling and deeply comforting.

When I read Jonah, I’m struck by something that is easy to overlook.

The greatest miracle isn’t that a fish swallowed a man. The greatest miracle is that God refused to give up on him. Jonah wanted to escape God’s calling. Instead, he discovered God’s mercy.

That’s a lesson every one of us needs.

You may still wonder exactly how Jonah survived those three days. Scripture doesn’t answer every scientific question we might ask. Instead, it points us toward the God who rules storms, seas, sea creatures, and stubborn prophets alike.

The message of Jonah is not simply that God can perform astonishing miracles.

It is that God’s mercy is often greater than our rebellion, and His purposes are stronger than our determination to run from Him.

At the center of Matthew 28:19–20 is a jaw-dropping truth: God hasn’t finished His work upon the Earth. Yes, Jesus completed His mission, but now—drumroll, please—it’s our turn to step into ours. On the cross, Jesus declared, “It is finished” (John 19:30), and oh yes, it truly was—sin paid in full, death crushed, salvation locked in for eternity.

Then, after His glorious resurrection, Jesus turned to His disciples and handed them their divine marching orders: “Go, reach the lost and make disciples.” The very work He modeled during His time on Earth now becomes the sacred calling of every Gospel-loving, Jesus-following, Spirit-led believer.

Let it sink in: the Earth quaked, the temple curtain split like a ripped-up contract, the sky went pitch black, and then—BOOM—the tomb exploded with life. Heaven was shouting from the rooftops: salvation is DONE. But Jesus didn’t say, “Kick back, you’re good now,” or “Enjoy the vibes,” or “Stay comfy.” Nope. He said, “Go.” He called us to suit up, show up, and step onto the field. Baptizing, teaching, discipling—these aren’t spectator sports. They’re the ongoing mission of the body of Christ, fueled by His Spirit and bursting with purpose.

So what does this mean for us? It means our faith can’t be tucked away like grandma’s china—pretty but unused. Jesus calls us to live bold, intentional, outward-facing lives—making disciples in our homes, neighborhoods, workplaces, and yes, even across oceans if He leads. When you share a Bible verse with your kids, lift up a struggling co-worker, pray with your neighbor, or support a missionary—you’re stepping into the Great Commission. Jesus nailed His part (literally); now He invites us to play ours with passion and purpose.

And here’s the best part: we’re not flying solo. Jesus wraps His command with a promise: “I am with you always, to the end of the age.” The same power that cracked open the grave walks with us as we carry out His mission. Our job isn’t to save the world—that’s already been handled. Our job is to announce to the world that it’s salvation has been accomplished and to invite people into the supernatural, joy-filled journey of salvation and discipleship.

So, beloved, may the Lord ignite in you a fresh fire to embrace your role in His magnificent mission. May you feel the thrill of partnering with the risen Christ, and may His presence fill you with courage, creativity, and love as you carry His finished work to a world that’s waiting with open hearts. When Jesus—the Light of the World—died on the cross, creation didn’t whisper... it roared. Darkness fell, rocks exploded, the temple veil shredded, and graves cracked open (Matthew 27). These weren’t random cosmic hiccups; they were divine fireworks announcing that Jesus’ death was the ultimate cosmic reset—obliterating sin, smashing death, and flinging wide the door to God.

At high noon, the sky went pitch black for three full hours (v. 45), as if creation itself was grieving its Creator. When the Light went out, Jesus absorbed the full weight of our sin’s shadow. The earth trembled, rocks split apart (v. 51), unable to stay silent in the face of such holy power. In the Bible, rocks and mountains often symbolize strength and permanence (Psalm 18:2). Their cracking? A loud, stone-faced confession: even the toughest crumble before Jesus’ authority.

Then came the veil. That ancient, towering curtain—over 60 feet high and thick as a man’s hand—stood like a “Do Not Enter” sign between humanity and God’s presence. But when Jesus died, it tore from top to bottom (v. 51). Not a random rip. This was God Himself grabbing the top edge and saying, “Enough! No more barriers—come close!”

Graves burst open, saints walked out (v. 52–53), proving Jesus didn’t just dent death—He demolished it. A Roman centurion, battle-hardened and unimpressed by drama, saw it all and declared, “Truly this was the Son of God!” (v. 54). If he got it, we can too!

When the Light went dark, it was for you. His death means you can approach God directly—no priest, no go-between. The torn veil is your invitation. The shattered rocks and opened tombs shout that nothing—no sin, no fear, no death—can keep you from His love. This is personal. Jesus did it to bring you near.

So run to Him! The veil’s gone—don’t let guilt or doubt hold you back. Talk to God like a trusted friend. Spill what’s heavy. Trust His forgiveness. Live boldly, knowing death’s been defeated. Share this hope with someone hurting—tell them Jesus broke every barrier for them. Step into His presence daily. He’s waiting.

The taunt flung at Jesus as He hung on the cross is soaked in irony: “He saved others; He cannot save Himself.” Spoken by the very chief priests, scribes, and elders who orchestrated His execution, it was meant to mock—but instead, they accidentally preached the Gospel. If Jesus had climbed down to save Himself, He couldn’t have saved us. That’s the glorious twist.

The only path to rescue sinners was for the sinless One to remain nailed to that brutal cross until death was crushed and redemption sealed. What looked like weakness was actually the most incredible display of power and love the world has ever witnessed.

Let it sink in: Jesus had healed lepers, opened blind eyes, even raised the dead. Of course He had the power to rip Himself free from those nails. But if He had chosen self-preservation, every soul in history would’ve been left without hope. Without salvation. Without eternal life. Hebrews 9:22 doesn’t mince words: “Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.” Our salvation hinged on His refusal to escape. He endured the cross, scorning its shame, because His eyes were locked on the joy of bringing many sons and daughters into glory (Hebrews 12:2). Out of the depth of His love, He refused to come down.

Why couldn’t forgiveness come another way? Because God’s holiness won’t allow sin, His justice requires its penalty—death (Romans 6:23), and His truthfulness won’t deny His Word. From the beginning He declared death as the wage of rebellion (Genesis 2:17). Even Jesus prayed, “Father, if possible, let this cup pass” (Matthew 26:39). But it didn’t—because there was no other way.

In our own lives, we oftentimes crave the shortcut out of pain. But in many cases, the greatest triumphs come not by saving ourselves, but by surrendering—trusting God’s purposes even when it stings. Even when it hurts. Even when it is the most painful experience we’ve ever endured, we’re called to lay down our lives—our pride, our comfort, our control—for the sake of others. That’s how we mirror Christ’s heart.

So what now? Live in awe of what His sacrifice achieved—your forgiveness, your eternal life, your freedom. And then, walk in His footsteps. When obedience to Christ feels costly or downright painful, remember Jesus. The cross was the ultimate act of “not saving Himself” so He could save you. Let that truth ignite your faithfulness when sacrifice is required.

May the Lord flood you with fresh wonder at the cross today. May He deepen your gratitude that Jesus chose not to save Himself, so you could be saved forever. And may He empower you to follow His lead—laying down your life in love, knowing that resurrection joy always follows the cross.

Pilate’s haunting question in Matthew 27 still echoes through eternity: “Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” Indecision about Christ is, in fact, a decision. You can’t dodge it, delay it, or delegate it. Every man, woman, and young person must answer it for themselves. Pilate tried to sidestep the weight of responsibility—and in doing so, he sealed his own tragedy. The crowd roared, “Crucify Him!”—Pilate acquiesced to their roar. And that same choice confronts us today.

Here’s the bottom line: you’re either for Jesus or against Him. No fence-sitting allowed. Pilate wanted to stay neutral, but neutrality toward Christ is rejection. Jesus Himself said, “Whoever is not with me is against me” (Matthew 12:30). Maybe you’re not hostile. Maybe you even admire Him. But let’s be clear—admiration won’t save you. Only faith and surrender will.

In reality, every single day, you’re making a decision about Jesus. Will you follow Him? Or will you push Him to the sidelines? Will you let the opinions of others, the pull of culture, or the fear of standing out keep you from Him? Pilate chose the crowd over Christ. Don’t make the same mistake.

The cross shouts how much God loves you. Jesus died so your sins could be forgiven. The empty tomb declares He is alive and mighty to save. And now He stands at the door of your heart, knocking, desiring to come in an bring you salvation. (Revelation 3:20) What will you do with Him? This is a personal decision—and only YOU can make it!

This is your moment. Don’t wash your hands of Jesus like Pilate. Don’t let the crowd drown out your conscience. Say yes to Him today. Give Him your heart. He gave everything for you—now it’s your turn to give everything to Him. If you’d like to accept Christ right now, you can pray this simple prayer from your heart:
